Known for her compelling documentaries, Nel’s work has screened at over 35 film festivals across the world, in prime-time television and on streaming platforms worldwide.

Prior to documentary Nel produced scripted comedy, short films and music videos. She has been a Walkley and Flickerfest judge and currently sits on the Gender Matters Taskforce at Screen Australia. Nel worked for almost two decades in Sydney and London before returning to Perth where she now lives.

KIRSTY MARILLIER

KIRSTY IS A SOUTH AFRICAN ACTOR AND AWARD-WINNING PLAYWRIGHT.

She plays police officer Rose Delaney in Channel 7’s Home and Away, and is a part of the Emerging Writers Group at Sydney Theatre Company.

MARK IS A PROUD NYIKINA MAN FROM THE KIMBERLEY IN NORTH WEST AUSTRALIA AND AN AWARD-WINNING AUSTRALIAN FILM, TELEVISION AND THEATRE ACTOR.

As well as a writer, producer and passionate sound designer.

He grew up in the town of Broome and received a certificate in Aboriginal Theatre from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), a Diploma of Indigenous Studies through Southern Cross University and a Post-Grad in Indigenous Arts Management at VCA.

His award credits include the Yvonne Cohen Award for Indigenous Arts, a Helpmann award for ‘Best Actor in a Play’ (The Drover’s Wife) and an AACTA award for best lead in an Australian drama (Mystery Road: Origin).

In 2013 his first funded feature These Final Hours premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival, picking up The Age Critics’ Choice Award for best film before later going onto its international premiere in the Director’s Fortnight section of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

2017 saw the release of his first US-based film, an adaptation of Stephen King’s novella 1922 starring Thomas Jane and Molly Parker, which was a Netflix original. The film had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin Texas and went onto critical acclaim. 2019 saw the release of his follow up, another Netflix original titled Rattlesnake starring Carmen Ejogo, making Hilditch the first and only Australian to solely write and direct two exclusively Netflix original films. Hilditch is represented by Sugar 23 and IAG in the US and is currently adapting Stephen King’ Revival while preparing to shoot his first Australian film since These Final Hours titled We Bury The Dead.

TOM IS A CURATOR AND CREATIVE PRODUCER WHO SPECIALISES IN CINEMA AND IS PERTH FESTIVAL’S LONG-STANDING PROGRAM ASSOCIATE: FILM.

With almost a decade working at Perth Festival, Tom is responsible for curating the annual Lotterywest Films program.

He is motivated by ideas in art and for audiences, and enjoys the chance to influence the places he works through art and new collaborations. The Best Australian Short Film Competition is a competition where people from all over Australia can send in their short films for the chance to share in a prize pool worth over $75,000.


2. Who can join the competition?

Absolutely anyone who is an Australian resident and aged 12 years and over! Whether you're an experienced filmmaker or someone who has never made a short film before, you're welcome to join. (If you're under 18, you’ll need your parent’s or guardian’s permission to enter).


3. Do I have to pay anything to enter?

4. When does the competition start and end?

The main competition is from Friday 22 September 2023 to Monday 22 January 2024. There's a special competition to win an SAE scholarship with $10k towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Animation or Film that runs from Friday 22 September 2023 to Friday 5 January 2024.


5. What kind of films can I submit?

Your film can be on any topic you like. Just make sure your film follows the technical rules (i.e. using acceptable resolutions, formats and sizes) and remember, it should be no longer than 10 minutes, including the title and credits.


6. Can I choose which category my film competes in?

Yes, you can select which category your short film competes in when you submit your entry. All submitted short films are eligible for the main prize.


7. Can I enter more than one short film?

Yes! Just remember, all entries must meet the terms and conditions.


8. Can I enter a film that I have showed in other places?

Yes, you can! If you’ve submitted your film into other film festivals or want to send it in the future, that's okay, as long as you check their terms and conditions.

14. What's the Next Gen Youth Prize and who can win?

The Next Gen Youth Prize is for young people who are aged between 12 and 18 years old. If you're in this age range, you can enter this category for your chance to win.


15. How do I enter the SAE Emerging Talent Prize?

To enter, fill out the form on the competition's entry page. The SAE Emerging Talent Prize has its own entry phase. It starts on Friday 22 September 2023 and ends on Friday 5 January 2024.


16. How is the main competition different from the SAE Emerging Talent Prize?

The main competition is for everyone 12 years and over. It starts on Friday 22 September 2023 and ends on Monday 22 January 2024.

The SAE Emerging Talent Prize starts on Friday 22 September 2023 and has an earlier deadline, which is Friday 5 January 2024. Entrants of the SAE Emerging Talent Award must meet SAE’s Entry Requirements and must agree to SAE’s Scholarship Policy.

Entrants of the SAE Emerging Talent Award must be:
- new commencing students who have not previously studied with SAE;
- 17 years of age turning 18 in the first year of study or older;
- an Australian citizen or permanent resident.


17. How are the films judged and how are the winners chosen?

A panel of judges called the “Competition Jury” reviews all short films and gives their feedback. To select the winners, they consider how well the idea was executed, how creative it is and how well the filmmaker’s talent is expressed through the film.


18. What happens after judging?

Films for consideration are shortlisted. From those, the finalists are selected. From the finalist films, the winners are chosen.


19. Can I still win something if I don't get the big prize?

Yes, even if you don't win the top prize, your film can still receive recognition in other categories.


20. How will I know if my movie is shortlisted or if I've won a prize?

If your film is shortlisted, we’ll send you an email to let you know. The winners will be announced at an awards night – the date, time and location will be confirmed by the organisers. By 30 March 2024, all winners will be informed about their prizes.


21. Can I ask why my film didn't win?

Our judges are unable to provide individual feedback.


22. Can I appeal if my movie doesn't win or isn't chosen as a finalist?

Unfortunately, there's no appeal process. The judges’ decision is final.


23. What is the Peoples’ Choice Prize?

The Peoples' Choice Prize is a special award chosen by the public. From February 1 to February 18, 2024, people can vote online for their favourite short film from a curated list of entries on perthnow.com.au/basf. The film with the most votes at the end of the voting period wins the Peoples’ Choice Prize. Everyone that votes will automatically go into the draw to win $1000.


24. How can I enter the People's Choice Prize?

If your film gets shortlisted, it is eligible for the Peoples' Choice Prize. All shortlisted entries will be announced on February 1, 2024 at perthnow.com.au/basf at 10am WST


25. What are the technical requirements for my film?

Your film must follow the technical requirements set out in the competition for it to be accepted. It must be in 4K, 2K or 1080p resolution. The sound should be good quality, and your film file should not be too large (up to 10GB).


26. Can I submit my film on film or videotape?

No, film and videotapes will not be accepted. The competition only accepts digital files, like MP4 or MOV formats.


27. Do I need to add subtitles to my film?

If your film is in a language other than English, you’ll need to add English subtitles or dubbing to make it accessible to all.

33. What happens if my film gets shortlisted?

If your film is shortlisted, it means that it has caught the attention of the judges! Shortlisted films have the chance to be shown on perthnow.com.au for everyone to watch. It's a great opportunity to share your work with a wider audience.


34. What rights do I have over my film's content?

You'll always own the rights to your film's content, including copyright.


35. What rights do I grant to the organisers by submitting my film?

By submitting your film, you give the organisers permission to use your film on their online platforms for up to 24 months. Organisers may also use short clips to promote the film and the competition. For any live screenings, they'll need your permission.


36. Can the organisers make changes to my film?

We may make minor edits for technical or content reasons only but we will contact you prior to any changes being made.


37. What if my film features other people?

You need to ensure everyone in your film has given written consent for their image and performance to be used. If anyone is under 18, you'll need consent from their parent or guardian too.


38. Can I include other copyrighted material in my film?

If your film includes music, images or anything else protected by copyright, you'll need permission from the copyright owners. You can find more information at the Arts Law Centre of Australia.


39. What if my film includes Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property Rights (ICIP Rights)?
